Pre-departure declaration, import

When importing goods into the EU you are required to submit a pre-arrival declaration to a customs authority. This means that some information about the goods should be submitted before the goods enter the EU.

There are two types of pre-arrival declarations:

  • Entry summary declaration - the carrier is responsible
  • Transit declaration – the declarant is responsible

Entry summary declaration

You are required to submit an entry summary declaration before your goods reach the EU. The time for submitting this information depends on the mode of transportation of your goods. The purpose of the entry summary declaration is to protect the EU from dangerous goods and complying with the increased security standards of global trade.

Transit declaration

When transiting your goods you can enter an entry summary declaration in a transiting declaration, which can be found in the New Computerised Transit System, NCTS. The purpose of a transiting declaration is to ensure that transported goods are under customs supervision.

Special provisions for Norway and Switzerland

Norway and Switzerland are part of the EU security zone. This means that you are not required to submit a entry summary declaration when importing goods from Norway or Switzerland.

An authorisation is required

You may need authorisation from Swedish Customs to submit information digitally.
