Moving between Sweden and another EU country

If you are moving to Sweden from another country in the EU, you do not need to pay customs duty, VAT or other taxes for your personal belongings. This is because Sweden is a member of the EU’s Customs Union. Additionally, you do not need to submit any import declaration.

Exemption for areas outside the EU’s fiscal territory

There are certain areas that are not part of the EU’s fiscal territory. These include Åland, the Canary Islands and some areas belonging to France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Great Britain and Germany. These areas are exempt from EU tax regulations. The same regulations apply when moving between Sweden and one of these areas as when moving between Sweden and a country outside the EU.

Declaring firearms with Swedish Customs

If you are bringing a firearm or another dangerous object that requires a permit from, for example, the Swedish Police Authority to bring it into Sweden, you have to declare the weapon with Swedish Customs at the border. The party transporting the weapon is responsible for notifying Swedish Customs of this at the border.

Prior to you or the party transporting the weapon entering Swedish territory, you must fill out the form “Information concerning import or export of firearms for purposes other than temporary hunting or competition”. The form, along with any required permits, must be presented to a customs officer. This is done at a so called “red point”, found in a red aisle or red lane in the customs filter.

Register a vehicle

If you are bringing a vehicle with you when your move to Sweden, you need to register the vehicle with the Swedish Transport Agency. If you are moving from Sweden, you need to deregister the vehicle.

Permits for cultural goods

In order to export certain cultural goods from Sweden, you may need an export authorisation.
