Buying bangers, fireworks and other explosive goods online

If you order explosives online from another country, you may be prohobited from bringing them into Sweden unless you have a licence from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB).

In several other EU countries, it is legal to buy explosives such as bangers and fireworks. But to bring these products into Sweden, you may need an authorisation. If you don't have an authorisation, you risk being guilty of smuggling offences.

If you are under 18 years old, it is always illegal to bring in bangers, fireworks and other explosives.

What counts as explosives?

Examples of explosives include:

Ordering fireworks and other pyrotechnic goods

If you want to buy fireworks or other pyrotechnic goods from another country, you may need a permit. Different rules apply depending on the type of product and the country it is being sent from. You must be at least 18 years old to get a permit. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) issues permits.

The following applies to fireworks and pyrotechnic goods:

  • A permit is always required when you buy from a country outside the EEA.
  • Certain types of goods that you order from another EEA country can be brought in without a permit.
  • It is never allowed to bring in fireworks with a control rod without a permit.

The EEA is made up of the EU Member States plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
